Fflatiau Gweithwyr Abercynon

Edward Street, Abercynon, Rhondda Cynon Taff, CF45 4RA.

Planning permission for this £2.3 million development was granted in February 2023.

This development, in partnership with Rhondda Cynon Taff County Borough Council, will provide 12 one-bedroom homes for affordable rent on Edward Street, Abercynon in Rhondda Cynon Taff. Work has started on site by WK Plasterers LTD and it’s hoped that the scheme will be completed by early 2025.

The scheme received funding from the Welsh Government Social Housing Grant Programme in order to address the local housing needs.

These homes are designed to meet the latest environmental standards and will have an energy-efficient A-rated EPC due to a non-fossil fuel heating system.

The Edward Street area has a rich history. Before this development, it was home to the Abercynon Workmen’s Hall and Institute, a historic establishment that played a vital role in the community. Opened on December 18, 1905, and designed by the local architect Mr. F. Gibson, it stood as the largest such building in South Wales at the time. The hall was a hub for various activities, hosting notable figures like Keir Hardie, Ramsay MacDonald, and Aneurin Bevan. It was also a venue for local Eisteddfodau, concerts, operas, meetings, lectures, adult education events, and gatherings of literary societies.
