Independent living

Newydd has several independent living apartments and studios in the Vale of Glamorgan and Rhondda Cynon Taff. These schemes are designed for single people and couples aged 60 and over, or for those that are over 55 and are registered disabled or receiving permanent medication for an illness. Independent living apartments and studios are an ideal housing option for those who seek a secure environment, which is tailored to their individual needs, but wish to retain their independence and autonomy.

Independent Living Officers

Some of our independent living schemes benefit from an Independent Living Officer, who is usually on-site during office hours, Monday to Friday. They carry out daily checks on tenants (who request this service) and are responsible for the day-to-day management of their scheme. The Independent Living Officers can give basic advice on welfare benefits and budgeting, rent advice and assist with some anti-social behaviour or neighbour nuisance issues. It is not their responsibility to provide any personal care to tenants. They can, however, advise and signpost our tenants to personal care services and other specialist support agencies available locally. Visiting family members who do not live in the vicinity can also use the guest room facility for a small fee.

The Independent Living Officer has a master key to gain access to apartments and studios within their scheme in the event of an emergency. There are also emergency pull cord systems located in all communal areas and apartments/studios for additional peace of mind.

Some of our independent living schemes do not have an Independent Living Officer working on site, however they do have an emergency pull cord system installed in individual apartments. All of our emergency pull cords are linked to a Contact Centre which is manned 24 hours a day, every day.

Door entry system

To ensure residents feel safe and secure in their homes, there is a door entry system at most of our schemes. Some schemes also benefit from a lift or a stairlift, enabling easier access around the scheme. We also work alongside our tenant groups, who along with the Independent Living Officers, help to encourage social activities and arrange trips.
