Merely twenty-one months after planning permission was received from the Vale of Glamorgan Council, Newydd Housing Association tenants are moving into Junction House on Hood Road in Barry.
The 24 social rented and 18 market rented one and two bedroom flats built by Jehu Group, and part of the Goodsheds regeneration project, also recently celebrated double success at this year’s Ystadau Cymru 2020 Awards, gaining the overall ‘winner of winners’ award.
This housing led urban regeneration project offers a perfect place for residents to live and work or try a new venture, following the principles of live, work and play.
Delivered in partnership with DS Properties (Goodsheds) Ltd and the Vale of Glamorgan Council, the development is one of three Newydd schemes that has received Welsh Government Innovative Housing Programme funding.
The Minister for Housing and Local Government, Julie James said, “These innovative homes at Junction House are a fantastic example of how housing-led regeneration can provide high quality, sustainable and affordable homes to the benefit of local people and communities. The coronavirus pandemic has highlighted the importance of a safe, secure and affordable homes like never before in places where people aspire to work and live. These new homes at the former Goodsheds site embody this.”
Cllr Lis Burnett, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said, “The Vale of Glamorgan Council is proud to have supported the exciting mixed use Goodsheds through the Targeted Regeneration and Investment Loan Programme. The scheme which, alongside the reuse of an important historic former industrial building, has provided much needed social rented housing as well private rented accommodation and has continued the Council’s regeneration of Barry’s Waterfront and the creation of the Innovation Quarter as a place where people can live, work and play in a sustainable way.
“We have a critical need for additional affordable housing, particularly in Barry. It is therefore pleasing to see a site in Barry being regenerated and also providing 24 much needed social rented homes for people who were previously either homeless or living in accommodation that did not meet their needs.”
Simon Baston from DS Properties (Goodsheds) Ltd said, “We have been particularly impressed with Newydd’s specifications and their willingness to integrate their scheme into our project which is one of the first in the UK. We hope our partnership will create many job opportunities and business prospects for local residents due to its innovative and community-led nature.”
The other Newydd schemes receiving Welsh Government Innovative Housing Programme funding, also in the Vale of Glamorgan, include an energy positive adapted bungalow in Dyffryn with low carbon design and renewable energy technology, and the other in Llangan, offers a rural business hub and residential units using the Beattie Passiv method.
