Significant community benefits delivered in Llandrindod Wells

A Newydd Housing Association development on Ithon Road, in partnership with Powys County Council, has brought significant community benefits to the Llandrindod Wells area.

These initiatives, valued at almost £11,000, were carried out by the project's contractor, Hale Group, reflect a strong commitment to giving back to the local community.

As part of its community engagement efforts, Hale Group has funded and completed a variety of projects that address local needs. These projects include the refurbishment of community spaces, such as the replacement of cemetery benches, and significant improvements to local schools and community centres.

The contractor provided new uniforms and a Christmas meal for volunteers at Ysgol Trefonnen School as part of the Community Fridge initiative. They also carried out maintenance and painting work at both Ysgol Penmaes Satellite Provision and Crossgates Primary School. Additionally, a boiler was replaced at Celf o Gwmpas, and the toilet block at Llanyre Park was refurbished to ensure these facilities are in excellent condition for community use. All work was completed to the highest standards, covering both labour and materials.

Rhodri Boosey, Contracts Manager at Hale Group said, “It’s been a pleasure to work with Newydd to support local community projects over the last few years, in line with our Ithon Road development. The duration of the multi-phased project has provided us with the excellent opportunity to leave long-term tangible legacies within Llandrindod Wells.”

Councillor Jake Berriman, Cabinet Member for a Connected Powys said, “I have had the pleasure of working closely with both Hale and Newydd since I was first elected in 2019. They have always been quick to address concerns I have raised on behalf of residents and to engage proactively in respect of this later phase of development to ensure that the potential impacts on existing residents was minimised. But, more than that, they have made point of reaching out to me as a local Councillor to help identify projects that they could invest in to make a positive impact on, and leave a lasting legacy for, the local community.  Initially, this was by refurbishing the cemetery lychgate and railings and, on this occasion, replacing dilapidated benches for the benefit of those visiting the cemetery site. The positive feedback I have received confirms that their generosity of spirit (and funds) has been gratefully received.”

Rachel Honey-Jones, Head of Community Regeneration at Newydd Housing Association said, "We are delighted to see the positive impact these community projects have had in Llandrindod Wells. The Ithon Road development has always been about more than just providing quality housing—it’s also about investing in the community. We would like to thank Hale Group who have worked hard to make a lasting positive impact in the area."

The Ithon Road development, instructed by Newydd Housing Association, will provide 79 homes for affordable rent to local people. Funded in part by the Welsh Government Social Housing Grant, the development will offer a mix of 1-bedroom apartments, 2-bedroom bungalows, and 2, 3, and 4-bedroom houses. These homes are in addition to the 55 homes on Ithon Road already completed by Newydd in 2021.

These new timber-framed homes will be fitted with air source heat pumps and photovoltaic solar panels, helping to reduce both carbon footprint and energy bills. Other members of the design team employed on this new housing scheme include RPA Group, Smart Associates, Asbri Planning, Chamberlain Moss King, Indigo Safety Management, and Fiona Cloke Associates.

Local residents interested in renting these properties are encouraged to register with Homes in Powys to apply.
