Staying Safe During The Upcoming Emergency Alert Test If You Have A Hidden Phone

On Sunday, 7 September, all compatible 4G and 5G enabled mobile phones and tables will experience a test of the Uk Government’s Emergency Alert System. The good news is that you won’t have to take any action after the alert sounds but, even if your phone is on silent, your device will make a loud siren noise, vibrate, and receive a text message.
Some people, such as those experiencing domestic abuse, may have a hidden phone in their home which they want to keep hidden from their abuser. To keep safe and opt out of emergency alerts for your iPhones and Android phones:
- Search your settings for ‘emergency alerts’;
- Turn off ‘severe alerts’ and extreme alerts’.
Find the full details on how to opt out of the emergency alerts here.

Education Maintenance Allowance Is Changing

If your child/children are aged between 16-18 and are starting further education in September 2025, they may be eligible to receive Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA).
EMA is a weekly grant of £40, designed to support 16 to 18-year-olds from eligible households with further education costs, such as transport or meals.
The threshold for households with one dependent child will be changing from £20,817 and will increase to £23,400 and households with two or more dependents will be changing from £23,077 to £25,974.
