Reduce condensation in your home

What is condensation?

There is always moisture in the air, even if you can’t see it. When the air gets colder, it cannot hold the moisture which then condenses on cold surfaces such as windows, doors and even walls.

What causes condensation?

  • Too much moisture being produced in your home

  • Not enough ventilation

  • Cold surfaces

  • The temperature of your home

Read our tips below on how to reduce condensation in your home.

Reduce condensation in your bathroom

The hot water from your shower/bath creates steam that turns into moisture. Here are some tips to reduce condensation in your bathroom:

  • Keep your bathroom door shut: This stops moisture from spreading throughout your home.

  • Open a window: This lets the steam escape and helps ventilation.

  • Turn on your extractor fan: If you have an extractor fan, you can use this to help the moisture escape the room.

  • Wipe down excess moisture: Wipe down excess moisture after your shower to prevent mould from growing.

Reduce condensation while cooking

When cooking meals on the hob, the steam from boiling pots can cause condensation. Here are some tips to reduce condensation while cooking:

  • Put lids on the pans: Covering your pans with lids will ensure there’s less steam escaping into your kitchen.

  • Turn on your extractor fan: You can use this to help the moisture escape the room.

  • Keep your internal doors shut: Keep your door shut to stop moisture spreading throughout the house.

Reduce moisture around your windows

Here are some tips to reduce moisture around your windows:

  • Open your curtains: This helps the sunshine in and it will warm the room up too.

  • Wipe down the windows: This will help stop the mould from appearing.

Reduce condensation when washing your clothes

Stop damp clothes from causing condensation in your home with these tips:

  • Let clothes dry outside: Even if it’s a cold day, as long as it’s dry you can dry your clothes outside to help keep walls and windows free from mould in your home.

  • Dry your clothes near open windows/doors: Even if you don’t have access to a garden or balcony, you can open external windows and doors to help dry your clothes. This helps let the moisture out.

Using your vents to reduce condensation

During the colder months, the temperature difference between inside the home and outside can cause condensation in your home. If you have vents on your windows, you can open these to help the moisture escape.
