New affordable housing scheme launched in Abercynon
Newydd, in partnership with Rhondda Cynon Taff County Borough Council, Welsh Government, and WK Plasterers Ltd, is thrilled to announce the launch of brand-new affordable homes on Edward Street, Abercynon.
The £2.8million development, located on the site of the former Abercynon Workmen’s Hall and Institute, will provide 12 one-bedroom homes for affordable rent, helping to address local housing needs in Rhondda Cynon Taff.
This scheme, rich in community history, received planning permission in February 2023 and was made possible through funding from the Welsh Government’s Social Housing Grant Programme, Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council and private finance.
The Abercynon Workmen’s Hall and Institute, which opened in 1905, was once the largest such building in South Wales. It served as a hub for cultural and educational activities, hosting notable figures such as Keir Hardie, Ramsay MacDonald, and Aneurin Bevan.
Councillor Mark Norris, Cabinet Member for Prosperity and Development, attended a launch event to celebrate the scheme's progress. He said, “I know former Councillor Alby Davies MBE would have loved to have seen this development come to fruition, having worked tirelessly to see this project get off the ground. This project is a testament to what can be achieved by working together to tackle housing challenges in our communities. These new homes in Abercynon will provide much-needed affordable accommodation while meeting high environmental standards, ensuring they are fit for the future."
Jason Wroe, Chief Executive of Newydd Housing Association, added, "This development not only provides much-needed homes but also respects the legacy of Edward Street, building on its historic significance while looking forward to a sustainable future."
James Lloyd Kathrens, Director of WK Plasterers Ltd, said, "We are proud to be delivering this housing scheme on our doorstep. Our local team is dedicated to delivering high-quality homes that not only meet but exceed environmental standards, ensuring a sustainable and comfortable living environment for future residents."
Designed to meet the latest environmental standards, the homes will feature A-rated Energy Performance Certificates (EPC) and a non-fossil fuel heating system, ensuring energy efficiency and sustainability for residents.
