Snow and ice
Keep an eye on the weather forecast so you know if there is any severe weather on its way.
Make sure you have enough supplies stocked in case you are unable to get to the shops. Tinned and dried foods will last a long time, and it’s also advised to have meals you can heat up to help warm you from the inside.
Ensure you have plenty of warm clothing. Many layers are better than a few thick ones.
If you have a care-alarm installed, make sure you test it by initiating a call to the call centre. Keep them informed of any changes to your emergency contact details.
Protect your home
Check that your heating is working correctly and report any issues that you may come across on 0303 040 1998.
Spot potential problem areas early, such as any pipework that is exposed to the elements. You can protect these from freezing by insulating them with lagging.
You can purchase lagging from local DIY shops or contact Welsh Water for lagging kits and information.
Keep your central heating on low to prevent pipes from freezing or set the heating to come on for at least an hour every day if you are going to be away.
Locate your stop tap, make sure you know how to use it and ensure it’s in good working order. If the worst should happen and a mains water pipe freezes and then bursts, you’ll need to make sure you can shut the water off quickly.
If you come across a frozen water mains pipe, here’s how to solve the issue:
1. If a pipe is leaking, first place a bowl beneath the leak to catch the water to prevent any damage. You may also need to pull up any carpets and place towels to absorb the damp.
2. Turn off the water at the main stopcock.
3. Turn off any boilers and drain water form the system by running all the taps.
4. You can gently thaw a frozen pipe using a hairdryer or a hot water bottle. Remember, thaw from one end and not the middle!
5. Contact us immediately on 0303 040 1998 if you do not have a water supply due to burst/frozen pipes.

Severe weather warnings
Please be aware that in severe weather conditions where a local or national weather warning has been issued, we will only be able to respond to emergency repairs. In these conditions, prioritised emergency repairs include:
severe roof leaks
blockage of only toilet
loss of power
loss of gas
loss of heating
loss of immersion heater if this is the only source for hot water
security issues (such as damage to doors or windows that would prevent the property from being secure)
damage to the property that could cause immediate risk to occupants, neighbours or passers by (such as loose roof slates)
damage to property that could cause further damage to the property
