Shakespeare Gardens, Pontypridd
Rhondda Cynon Taff
Newydd Housing Association, with support from Rhondda Cynon Taff Council, have setting up an affordable housing co-operative scheme using our current 1 bedroom apartments at Shakespeare Rise, Rhydyfelin near Pontypridd.
Work on this housing cooperative started in February 2016, tenants moved into these 18 one bedroom apartments during the autumn of 2016 (see image below).
The contractor employed to carry out the redevelopment was Weston Contractors where they fully refurbished these homes to include new windows, doors and roof covering, a reconfigured communal area as well as brand new kitchens and bathrooms were part of a full internal refurbishment.
What is a housing cooperative?
A housing co-operative is a group of people who live in and take an active role in managing their home. This could involve day to day repairs, communal cleaning, window cleaning, decoration and gardening. Newydd, as landlord, would continue to be responsible for all major maintenance tasks and will continue to carry out gas and boiler safety checks.
The aim of the co-operative is that the tenant will pay an affordable rent but they could manage the accommodation (e.g. day to day repairs, decoration, window cleaning etc.), by doing so, normally by committee, the tenant may not need to pay any additional service charges.
Living in a housing co-operative gives you more control over your home and how you live in it with your neighbours. As a co-operative member, you play an active role in shaping the type of community you want to live in.
