Tŷ'r Barnwr

Vale of Glamorgan

Named after a competition held in local press, Tŷr Barnwr, Tŷr Gyfraith and Y Meinciau, the development of 52 new houses and apartments is now complete and all tenants are now settling into their new homes.

The award-winning new development, praised for involving the local community during the build, was launched on 12th March by Lesley Griffiths, the Welsh Government Minister for Communities and Tackling Poverty, at a ceremony held at the impressive new scheme.

Mr and Mrs Holland moved into Tŷr Barnwr on the day of their anniversary in January. Mrs Sonia Holland said, "We moved here because of my health, there are no stairs or hills nearby so I can go out for walks. I am very happy now, I couldn't fault the flat, all the staff have been so helpful. I would like to thank everyone for their hard work."

Built in partnership with the Vale of Glamorgan Council and with £3.1 million support from the Welsh Government, the land was originally acquired in March 2013 with the aim of regenerating the local area and provide affordable homes for rent to local people.

Incredibly, 219 applications were received by Home4U, the Vale of Glamorgan affordable housing register from local people interested in living in these new homes, built to Code for Sustainable Homes Level 3+ standard as well as Secured by Design and Lifetime Homes standards.

A pioneering new course was offered to shortlisted teants prior to moving into their new homes. The accredited Tenancy Ready Project gave new tenants the chance to learn about the running of a successful tenancy, budgeting tips and ways to get involved in Newydd groups as well as allowing neighbours to get to know each other before moving in.
