Rooms4U donates £1,000 prize money to Vale Foodbank

On Monday 18th December, the Vale Foodbank received £1,000 from the Rooms4U shared housing project following their Pat Chown award win.

Back in October, Rooms4U, funded by Crisis UK, was recognised by Community Housing Cymru and awarded the Pat Chown Capturing Creativity award for finding innovative solutions to help people under the aged of 35 find a home.

Pat Chown gave a big part of her life to helping others, and the award in her memory came with a £1,000 prize. As this year’s award-winner, Rooms4U elected to donate the prizemoney to the Vale Foodbank which has expanded throughout the county, using 5 centres to distribute emergency food parcels to the community. The project was founded by local churches in 2011, working together towards stopping hunger in the local area.

Anne-Marie from the Vale Foodbank congratulated Newydd and Rooms4U on their award before adding: “We are delighted that the Foodbank was chosen as Rooms4U’s nominated charity and would like to thank them for this marvellous contribution to our work. This donation will enable us to continue supporting those in need, especially as Christmas is approaching, a time which often puts additional financial pressure on families and individuals already struggling to cope with everyday necessities.”

John Chown, Pat’s husband, was delighted to be present at the cheque presentation, he said, “We felt that Rooms4U has had a real positive difference on the lives of young people and were impressed at the thoughtful ways that the project was set up to help young tenants find housemates and the introduction of training and employment opportunities.

“I am incredibly pleased that the prize money has been donated to the Vale Foodbank, a worthy charity that works alongside Rooms4U, supporting people who may be going through a difficult period in their lives.”

Rooms4U is hosted by Newydd Housing Association with support from the Vale of Glamorgan Council, with the aim of providing young people with a solution to homelessness through shared housing.

Following the presentation, John, Hazel, Debbie, Claire and Nicola, who brought bags full of donations collected from both Newydd and Rhydyfelin Netball, all remained at the Coastlands Church to volunteer their time to help the Food Bank for the day.
