Pontypridd Planters Instant Hit
Newydd’s Community Regeneration team worked closely with EggSeeds and YEPS RCT to provide young people of Rhondda Cynon Taf with a creative project to get stuck into. This time, it was a hands on woodwork project to create wooden planters to be placed around Pontypridd.
The project saw 28 young people from all over RCT come together at Hawthorn High School and build wooden planters from scratch, recycling old pallets into useful and attractive installations. With many planters being on display opposite Pontypridd train station, the group agreed that it would be fitting to have some lyrics from Green, Green Grass of Home which was made a No.1 hit by Pontypridd’s very own Tom Jones, engraved into the wood.
It took the project 10 weeks to complete the planters and 2 whole days to install them around the town; including planting some fragrant herbs, sweet strawberries and colourful flowers!
Scott Tandy, Newydd’s Community Regeneration Officer, was very proud of what the project achieved, “It’s amazing to see these boys and girls come together regularly and putting so much effort into the project. From a pile of salvaged wood in the back of a van to stunning planters in the middle of Pontypridd, it was a really fulfilling project and everyone involved should feel proud of what they’ve achieved.
To think that this all stemmed from one small, wooden flower pot that was thrown together last year; to 25 impressive planters around Pontypridd and now we’ve got councillors and members of the public approaching us wanting similar projects set up in their area all over! It’s brilliant.”
