Community Team shortlisted for participation ‘Oscars’

Newydd Housing Association’s Community Regeneration Team have been shortlisted in the ‘Team of the year’ category at the TPAS Cymru Participation Awards 2017.

Set up to celebrate and recognise that tenant participation changes housing services and communities for the better, the TPAS Cymru award ceremony will take place on 4th of July at the Park Inn, Cardiff. Tenants and housing staff from all over Wales will be attending to acknowledge the hard work that landlords and tenants do as well as to share, learn and compare.

The ‘Staff Team of the Year’ award at the ceremony will recognise a team’s commitment to supporting tenant and community involvement. Newydd’s Community Regeneration Team, led by manager Rachel Honey-Jones, will find out on the night whether they will be bringing the award back home with them to display at their headquarters in Tongwynlais, Cardiff.

Consisting of ten staff, each member has a responsibility for a different area of work within seven key themes, these are tenant involvement, digital inclusion, youth engagement, health and wellbeing, community benefits, tenancy ready and education, employment and training. From computer classes, parkour sessions to a fitbit club and hoarding projects, the breadth of activities offered across the Vale of Glamorgan, Rhondda Cynon Taff, Neath Port Talbot and Powys are vast.

Last year they exceeded all targets including engaging with 605 young people, 307 people took advantage of free computer help at Digital Drop-ins and 257 engaged in job clubs and training workshops. The Big Lottery funded hapi project has engaged with 1120 individuals and 20 organisations since the health initiatives scheme started in 2015.

Rachel Honey-Jones, Community Regeneration Manager at Newydd said, “I am so proud of my team and what they have achieved. Everyone works tirelessly to make a difference to our tenants and communities and have developed fantastic relationships with our customers who think very highly of them. What they have achieved to date is outstanding, particularly for a small team covering such a wide geographical area. I’m so grateful for their hard work and hope that the team get the recognition they deserve on the night.”
